Original artwork description:

This painting is part of my collection of paintings incorporating the Latin phrase “memento mori” with the purpose of reminding people of their morality, an artistic theme dating back to antiquity. It is largely inspired by Mexico's Dia de los Muertos and the sugar skulls that it is famous for.

The painting features a quote by Lord Byron: "Start not - nor deem my spirit fled; In me behold the only skull, From which, unlike a living head, Whatever flows is never dull."

Created using a very fine brush to achieve the detailing and shadows. The face detail was achieved using ink and a calligraphy nib. Diamond dust has been used on sections of the background which sparkle as they catch the light, giving off a brilliance and sense of movement, in a twinkling gemstone effect. The block of colour are painted over an embossed floral pattern.

Framed in a 30mm wide dainty ivory & gold brushed ornate frame. Crystal clear 2mm acrylic glazing. Shatter proof and 20% clearer than glass. The painting is signed on the front and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity attached to the back of the frame. The frame is complete with an acid free double mount and backing board, which protects the artwork.

Materials used:

Acrylic, ink & diamond dust
