Believe it or not, apart from chocolate, expensive watches, punctual trains, fast skiers and cheese fondue the Swiss are also good at the obscure craft of typography. In the 50s and 60s the 'Swiss Style' became an internationally accepted updated version of the 'International Typographic Style' of the 20s and 30s. Why a landlocked, mountainous country became world leaders at fiddling with fonts is a mystery. In the 1970s German born Wolfgang Weingart (1941-2021) began a one man assault on the Swiss Style - "I took Swiss Typography as my starting point, but then I blew it apart...". He became known at the Swiss Punk Typographer. Like a serial killer Weingart took a chainsaw to the Swiss Style with his innovative designs and manipulation of type. Looking at some of his work - with its stark, sharp-edged black and white craziness - will give you a migraine. Weingart took the dull and boring world of typography into art. This is what I'm talking about.
