It’s a return to the sweet shop for my latest pop art food painting, with a canvas depicting the classic British sweet, a Wham Bar, coming out of it's ripped packaging.
The Wham Bar is a chewy pink fruit juice-flavoured sweet mixed with colourful sugary crystals of popping candy. They remind me of my childhood, but you can still buy them today.
As ever with classic sweets the packaging was always very eye-catching and well designed, and the Wham Bar is no different. That's why I always like to include the wrapping in my paintings if possible, making the painting a piece of eye-catching hand-drawn typography as well as a representation of food, all done in my trademark pop style.
The wrapper side was done using Posca acrylic paint pens to get the precision of the lettering right, while the bar end was done using normal acrylic paint, thickly applied, creating a pleasing contrast between the two halves. The design goes around the edge of the stretched cotton canvas as pictured, making it more like a 3D art object that's ready to hang. It's signed and dated on the back frame.
The end result is a bold bright painting that would brighten up any room in your home, or would make an ideal gift for someone with a sweet tooth.
Size -
19.6 inches x 7.8 inches
50cm x 20cm
Roughly 1.5cm thick
The final image shows some of the other retro sweet pop art paintings in my shop, which would look great all displayed together.
I've been inspired to create work like this by classic pop artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Patrick Caulfield, and by modern day graphic designers and food packaging.
Postage will be first class in a cardboard envelope. I can also do paintings to order, use the 'commission' button to get in touch.
