Artwork description:

As a South African living in London next to the Walthamstow Wetlands, I thought it might be fun to bring another South African and place her in the Wetlands - a spotted hyena - often called 'Laughing Hyenas'. Famed scavengers, these cool carnivores have a reputation for eating the leftovers of other predators. But don’t be fooled, they’re super-skilled predators themselves! In fact, they hunt and kill most of their food.
Spotted hyenas often hunt in groups and can take down big animals such as wildebeest, antelope, zebras and young hippos. Smaller snacks on their menu include birds, fish, snakes, lizards and insects, too.

This wood engraving was created on a barge moored next to Hackney Wick and the Olympic Park, under the tutelage of the wonderful Chris Daunt. The carving is done on Lemonwood and printed by hand onto Japanese Gampi paper which is stuck onto 100% cotton paper using Nori (Japanese rice glue). The hyena is printed with a black ink with a hint of gold.
Each print is numbered and has the studio chopmark in the right hand corner.
