Artwork description:

I am part of a group of artists called 'The Collective Art Group' and this is a collagraph hand made print I did for an art show at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham near to Barnsley. This House has been featured in film and TV for example the period tv drama Victoria and more recently in Gentleman Jack. Wentworth Woodhouse belonged to the Fitzwilliam family, one of the richest families in Britain at the time. It comprises of two joined houses, forming west and east fronts. The original house, now the west front, with the garden range facing northwest towards the village, was built of brick with stone details. The east front is said to have been built as the result of a rivalry with the Stainborough branch of the Wentworth family. In my print I show the west front. This hand made print is based on the history of Wentworth Woodhouse. After taking a tour of the house and gardens plus reading the book Black Diamonds By Catherine Bailey, I set about producing this piece of work. Basically it depicts Wentworth Woodhouse surrounded by an abstract industrial landscape, simply because all the wealth came from coal and all the developing industry/trains etc were powered by coal. This artwork is printed on 370gsm watercolour paper. A collagraph print is one made from a plate with different textures. My printing plate is made from mounting board. The process is a combination of intaglio and relief. I Collaged my plate with different textures in this instance tile adhesive. I also cut into the plate with a scalpel. Then I sealed it with shellac. The plate is then coloured with stay open inks and printed. I will pack this print flat between layers of cardboard (see me at work pic) This print is sold unframed. Each print will be slightly different, which in turn makes each one unique.

Materials used:

stay open oil based inks on 370gsm watercolour paper
