Wallpaper dates back to around the 1500s and was first used as a cheaper replacement for tapestries, which the upper classes put on their walls for decoration and insulation. For the less well off wallpaper became an economical alternative, and in the first instances whole walls were papered with a single image. As woodblock printing, silk screening and other printing methods became more sophisticated wallpaper manufacturers, of which England and France were the world leaders, started utilising repeated patterns. Nowadays all things are possible: ink-jet printing means that customised wallpaper is easy to produce; a coating of silver ink will block out mobile phone and WiFi signals; glass fibre reinforced wallpaper can keep walls from falling down in an earthquake. As a boy I can well remember helping my father to match up repeated patterns whilst decorating rooms at home. I don't think my father would have approved of rolls of paper designed like this. This is a twin of the artists other Weird Wallpaper painting (with Cocktails, Hot Dogs and Tulips). The artist would accept an offer of €3000 for both paintings (ie, €1500 each, a 25% discount)
