One day I was looking down the path of my garden, at a plant which leans over the paving. It was moving gently in a slight breeze. My eye was caught by its foliage seen from the side, catching the sunlight, in contrast to the deep shadowed area beneath. It gave me an idea for a design and I grabbed a piece of paper to make a simple sketch of it (see work-in-progress images).
I have a feeling that I will return to this design to try it out in different mediums, but the first I tried was a two-block linocut, which you see here. It is easy to achieve blended gradient colour with ink and roller (again, see work-in-progress images), easier I imagine than with screen printing or paint, and this gradient effect was an important element I wanted to include.
I tried softcut as opposed to traditional lino for the first time. Softcut I find is easy to carve into (as the name implies) but it is rubbery and stretchy and therefore not suitable for very precise, detailed designs. However, a relatively simple abstract design like this one works fine, and it was quick and fun to do.
I have called it 'Waving Blooms' because 'Waving Foliage' doesn't have quite the same cachet, does it? And the plant that inspired the design is a type of geranium which does in fact have bright little flowers in summer.
It is hand-printed using artists' quality oil-based printing inks on robust 250 gsm Clairefontaine Japanese Simili printmaking paper. The dots are added for extra sparkle with artists' quality acrylic paint. Due to the hand-finishing, each numbered print of the edition will have slight variations. The image itself is A6 size (105 x 148mm) on 160 x 240mm paper. It is sold unframed for economy of shipping, but I have included some app-generated images of it framed, to help you visualise what it might look like. It will be despatched to you wrapped in tissue paper in a reinforced envelope. I hope it will bring you joy.
Please note that I am willing to ship to most countries, so if the shipping profile for this artwork does not include where you are, please feel free to message me to make a request.
