Original artwork description:

This is my watercolour interpretation of the character Ophelia. Ophelia, a central figure in Shakespeare's Hamlet, is a young woman whose life is tragically intertwined with the play's central conflict. She is portrayed as a gentle, obedient, and deeply sensitive character, devoted to her father, Polonius, and brother, Laertes.

Ophelia's relationship with Hamlet is a significant aspect of her character. She is deeply in love with him, but their romance is complicated by Hamlet's mental instability and the political turmoil surrounding them. Ophelia's obedience to her father leads her to reject Hamlet's advances, further destabilizing him.

After her father's death and Hamlet's exile, Ophelia descends into madness, culminating in her tragic drowning. Her death serves as a powerful symbol of the destructive forces of love, madness, and political intrigue.

Ophelia's character has been a popular subject for artists throughout history, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites. Their fascination with her tragic story and their focus on detailed realism and symbolism led to iconic depictions of Ophelia.

She has often been pictured surrounded by wildflowers. In my interpretation, I included poppies, violets, roses and daisies.

The Pre-Raphaelite depiction of Ophelia has become synonymous with her character, solidifying her place in the cultural imagination. It highlights the enduring power of Shakespeare's tragic heroine and her ability to inspire artistic expression across centuries.
