Original artwork description:

Furthering my experimentation with curved forms and this particular joining technique, I have recently made a few pieces in one of the most elementary curved shapes - the oval or ellipse. More specifically, these are ovoids, because they reflect the shape of an egg, with an outer oval and an inner nucleus or yolk.

At the same time, this particular one suggests a shield volcano, with molten shapes in its concave caldera, and a vivid red-orange accent reminiscent of hot lava.

The piece consists of two pieces of brass, and one of copper. The oval outer shape is cut with a hand bench shear, with a hole cut on a drill press, then hammered with soft hammers to a gentle dome, and patinaed with sculptural patinas which are sprayed on while heating the metal, burned over, sprayed again, then brushed over with a second patina for a deep, textured color. The hole contains a separate piece, also cut and domed into a convex shape, with bronze flowed down it, taking its color from the firescale of the final melting operation, but with highlights buffed to a bronze sheen. Between the two is an annular piece of thin copper, colored using a high-heat patina to a vibrant, speckled red-orange suggesting something actually molten.

This wallpiece, like most of my wallpieces, will hang in almost any orientation - it is up to you to find your favorite. The way it's shown here is one of my favorites, but far from the only one.

This wallpiece is made to hang using picture wire, which is already attached to the back, making it a very easy piece to hang on any wall. The total weight is about 7 pounds (3.2kg). I do not recommend hanging this piece out of doors.
