Chine-collé Etching of Female Figure -

Here, the lone figure of a woman with her back to the viewer leaves whatever is behind her without looking back. Her movement and the sidelong wind are the only clues to her carefree emotional state. The design of this piece conveys an airy quality through the simplicity of the etched line, the spare background, and the transparent coloring of both dress and hair. The dress is a hand-tinted tissue paper that is infused into the print during the printing process. This process is known as chine collé and was often done by Rembrandt to add a touch of colour to his etchings.
