The island of Terschelling, like any island, is a special place with a character all its own. There is something about those endless wet mud flats that have a calming effect on you. It is this sense of peace and calm that I wanted to convey in this painting with the lone figure on the beach. The flagged rods in the water to mark mussel banks are a typical sight here. When the tide recedes, the locals come down onto the beach to collect shellfish.
I set up my easel on the wet sand and painted this minimalistic landscape leaving the upper half of the paper almost untouched with just a few streaks in the sky to suggest a break in the hazy cloud.
