A dusk scene where Flora, Goddess of Flowers, awaits her beloved; he appears in the image on the top left - and she turns to meet his lips. Their setting is in a dark landscape, with two twin trees backlit on the horizon symbolising their desire. Thoughts and desires float from Flora’s eyes to balance all the flowers on her dress.
This painting amongst many of my others over the years, was initially inspired by a line of Hafiz’s poetry "The lips of the one I love are my perpetual pleasure; the Lord be praised for my heart's desire is attained ..."
The flowers are inspired by the plant Nigella, which is also known as ‘Love in a Mist’. Although I created this painting in 2013, I’ve added many more flowers now, in 2023, because I have at last been able to grow the wonderful Nigellas … now profuse in my garden. Also, this summer has seen a new addition to my garden … Achillea … its subtle rich yellow has brought that colour into my palette! It is the one on the lower bottom left.
This is truly one of my favourite paintings; it’s very dear to my heart. I like its asymmetry and how Flora dominates the scene but stands aside so we can glimpse the receding landscape and the twin trees.
The painting continues over the edge of the canvas, so there is no immediate need for a frame.
I have used Winsor & Newton professional acrylics and given the painting a coat of Archival Matte varnish.
Ready to hang.
Packed flat and sent by Tracked delivery with a Certificate of Authenticity.
