Original artwork description:

This is the latest in my series of "Rusty Motoring Icons' and is perhaps the most widely recognised car all over the world. I owned a Beetle in the late 70s, and it was beginning to show rust marks, not as far gone as the one in my painting, I'm pleased to say, no doubt it is now!

The lovely shape lends itself to watercolour allowing wet into wet colours to run together and form those curves. I used a new blue (Dumonts blue) from Winsor and Newton which I think is beautifully complemented by the rich brown of burnt sienna, in the most part, and van dyke brown.

I was asked by a Frenchman at an exhibition over the weekend why I painted cars in this way, my answer, "because I enjoy it!"

Materials used:

Arches 300 gsm Rough watercolour paper and Winsor & Newton watercolours
