The Nikolo-Shartomsky monastery is one of the oldest in Russia, some sources attribute its origin to the 13th century. According to the surviving legend, a small icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was acquired by a pious peasant woman near the Shartoma River.
The monastery of St. Nicholas was founded not far from this place.
