"Visions of St. Catherine of Genoa"
Occasionally, as a change of pace, I get inspired to paint pop-surreal paintings of classical themes that are quite different from my usual entheogenic paintings. As a self-taught painter, I use these practice paintings to help hone my art skills and to explore classical subjects that I might otherwise avoid.
In my surreal portrait of St. Catherine of Genoa, I show her experiencing an ecstatic vision of Christ hanging on a Dali-style cross. A second figure of an infant Jesus appears out of a cloud. Because Catherine was known to eat agaric mushrooms, and some scholars have suggested that the agarics she ate may have been entheogenic Amanita muscaria mushrooms, I added a row of Amanita muscaria mushrooms.
