This work is a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture, formed from offcuts of wood, some geometric and some organic or biomorphic in shape, which have been arranged and painted. I wanted to try and translate some of the ideas used in my painting into three dimensions, and to experiment with found materials and the process of assemblage. The work is influenced by modernist abstraction and the work of artists such as Paul Klee and Schwitters. The art of Louise Nevelson has also been an important inspiration for this style of relief work, particularly in the integration of geometric and organic forms.
The process of making the piece involves a careful consideration of the way that the forms and colours in the work relate to one another to create an overall sense of harmony or equilibrium. I am interested in the creation of atmosphere and feeling through purely abstract means.
