Right in the centre of the third largest city in China, there are dozens of urban villages, wall-to-wall with gigantic shopping malls and glitzy new skyscrapers.
Like open-air time capsules locked in by greedy developers and poor city planning, these rural villages are accessed through labyrinthine alleyways or whatever space is left between the old houses and the new developments.
Inside the villages, the pace of life is very different from the outside. The remaining residents come and go, still full of energy despite their advanced age. Children play happily outside their homes, chickens, ducks, goats and dogs roam free. Patches of vegetables are still being grown and small stalls selling locally grown fruit and vegetables thrive in these bizarre, self-sufficient urban farms, hiding just behind sophisticated avenues which are a staple symbol of modern China.
