How tranquil these hippos appear with just their eyes above water, what fearsome bulk they hide beneath! I wanted to focus on the eyes of these animals and also on their habitat. This is their peaceful wallowing time and so I wanted to portray them as content and in their element. There is a hint of comic vanity about them here as well don't you think? A visitor to the scene wafts past in the foreground enhancing the sense of an authentic wild environment.
