This image was painted just before I left England for Cyprus in June 2013. I came across the image and was so taken by its composition and the way the little girl was looking, I painted in response to it. This also was one of the last paintings I did as part of my research on the relationship between painting and photography.
The painting is painted slightly cropped, compared with the original photograph, creating a tighter image. The mark-making was an experiment in following a looser style similar to the artist Adrian Ghenie - loose brush-marks, simplified drawing in paint and a more Zen like attitude to leaving the mark and not re-working, which I have developed further through my research in Cyprus and Spain.
