Sunset is the disappearance of the sun below the horizon and the time of its setting in the daily course of the sun as well as the celestial phenomenon as such with all its phenomena. Sunset is followed by the phases of twilight, which vary in length according to latitude. Sunset marks the end of the day. In some cultures - for example, among the ancient Germanic peoples, in Judaism and in Islam - it marks the end of the day, after which the following day begins. In today's international calendar system, however, the beginning of a civil day falls at midnight.
