I had a studio at the Hahndorf Academy for 7 years, and in the back garden stands an ancient linden tree. It was planted by one of the German settlers who founded Hahndorf in 1857, and before the Academy became a museum and art gallery, it was a school for the settlers' children, who would have played under the tree when it was still a sapling. A stream still runs through the garden.
After I moved down to the sea, some of the larger branches were lopped off the linden tree, and I asked if I could have one of them. I have kept it for a number of years and it is now perfectly seasoned. although a crack runs through the middle. My woodcut is actually an engraving, carved into the endgrain of a slice from the branch. The crack forms one side of the tree in my picture. Each print is individually hand coloured.
Hand coloured, printed with oil based ink on chine colle Hosho paper, mounted on Fabriano Rosaspina 125gsm paper
