This is one of my favorite paintings of one of my favorite things in one of my favorite places. "The Big Oak," a 340 year old Live Oak tree that lives in Thomasville GA, one of my favorite towns in the world. This massive tree is impressive on every level. The enormous boughs spread out 180 feet and the trunk is over 25 feet around.
I spent a summer summer afternoon under this great landmark, painting and loving this place. The thick fern growth along the limbs is called "Resurrection Fern." It goes dry and brown during dry weather and appears to die. Then when it rains, like magic it "resurrects" and becomes thick and lush and green, as it was the day I made this painting.
Painted en plein aire, on location under The Big Oak. Oil paint on prepared hard panel.
Oil paint, varnish, prepared hard board
