Maintaining a sketchbook is paramount for any artist. Ideas and images can come at any time...one must have the means to document, or it is lost. I always took my sketchbooks a little further and actually created painting in them. This mixed media piece, from my earlier days as an artist, speaks to the frailty of humans, and our capacity to trust.
On the base sheet of paper, there is a layer of spray paint and a stencil of a genderless person with their arms up in surrender. On a piece of transparent film the writing "What you can't see will ultimately hurt you" is the mantra...the price that is paid for being human, and being open to being hurt. It is worth it...I surrender as well.
