An atmospheric and misty lake scene, with two swans gliding serenely towards the foreground.
Soft blacks and reds have been subtly applied to two etched plates (one for each colour), to create this unique monoprint etching. This etching has been created using separate plates in order to allow for the layering of two different colours. Each etched plate is individually inked for each print. This method of etching creates a 'mono print', as each print varies according to the application and colours of the inks.
For the first etching plate, I have used zinc, aquatint (melting resin dust onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), acid and burnishing.
The second plate is made of steel. This has been 'textured' by washing acid directly onto and across the plate, to create the central (red), area of the image.
The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plates and selectively removed. The ink 'sits' within the small pits created by the acid. The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.
