A smaller studio painting based on my earlier 'Three Straw Bales' in which I accentuated the colour and focused also on texture and expressive mark making.

Straw bales have always caught my eye. I remember being captivated by them many years ago as I drove through country roads to work in a graphic design consultancy. They changed how I perceived the countryside, made it more interesting and beautiful. All these years later I still have the same fascination and now I know why. It's because they create an interesting composition where previously there may have been non or they elevate a scene to a new level, adding foreground and space. Groups of two or three in particular are effective with the change in angles and distance and how the shadows they create produce deep mauve, purple shadows which compliment the deep yellow ochre of the stubble.
