I was fascinated by the vintage illustrations by Japanese artist Watanabe Seitei. I painted a fairly accurate copy of the illustration of these two sparrows from the 1891 book Birds and Flowers.
Watanabe Seitei is Meiji painter, print artist and book illustrator famous for his naturalistic pictures of fauna and flora in the Nihonga style.
