A striking, richly hued oil painting that hints at a human figure through an assemblage of empty clothes, floating in dark space. The vibrant colours contrast strongly with the shadowy ground, creating a dramatic scene. This work was inspired by the strange, ancient characters and archetypes in fairy tales and folklore, who seem mysterious and obscure, as though shrouded in the mists of a distant past.
I began this work by sketching in the draped clothing, underpainting in opaque colours then glazing over the top to create a richly layered aesthetic. I then added the bluish - black background, deepening the shadows on the garments to make them recede into the dark space.

This canvas is ready to hang.
