Artwork description:

Much of my art focuses on women and the female form. I often have them half hidden but almost always with a direct gaze at the onlooker. This placement of females being hidden but defiant is not a conscious decision as I always work organically and on instinct, but now that I have come to recognise this in my work I wonder the reasons behind this particular portrayal of women, and I wonder if it is partly generational.
I grew up during the cusp of when women were coming out of the shadows more strongly than ever. Refusing to only be considered for their appearance or home making skills and demanding more rights in society. Growing up during these times of change I saw and experienced them first hand and maybe the many contradictions in which women were living through still bear weight inside me; the hiding, yet strong defiance and always being prepared to pounce out of the shadows when needed.
Please be aware that due to the many layers of ink placed by individual linoblocks there will be embossing and textural anomalies as well as speckles of ink on the margins, these marks are proof of the craft and handmade nature of my work.

Materials used:

Somerset satin 250gsm and oil based inks
