Memories of snorkelling around the Great Barrier Reef live as yesterday. The warm, clear waters being parted by playful red darts and enquiring parrot fish always bring a smile. Among those that frolicked though, were the mighty giant Triton snails who kept the reefs free from the invading crown of thorns. Their numbers were drastically reduced by shell collectors and as a result the thorns took over. However, diligent work by conservationists has brought the Triton back and its number now increase and so the reef can flourish.
