Original artwork description:

In Spring 2018 I spent 3 months in Tokyo participating in an artist residency. I did virtually no painting during this time since I was working on a video project collecting stories from people about particular places that were important to them in their local area. My project explored how places have multiple layers of subjective realities, how people experience places in their own ways. While in Tokyo I started to deconstruct my own experience of the city and particular spots that became important to me. Overall I was mesmerised by the overwhelming array of information and colour, and I looked for avenues to escape from the city. When I came back to London I learned about a website called what3words which allocates a 3 word code to each 3 square meter grid on the planet, as an alternative to postcodes. I made this painting in Summer 2018 on my return, and while thinking about my experience in Tokyo, I felt that this painting symbolised a very specific place and a point in time. If you go to the website and type the name of the painting, you will see the exact spot that I am talking about!
The painting is oil and varnish on wood and has a highly reflective surface.

Materials used:

Oil and Varnish on mounted Plywood
