This is a painting of an urban landscape across the railway tracks. It's a direct reference to Hopper and I could hardly believe my eyes as I took a suburban train from Penn station in New York, the view was so Hopperesque.
I had come to visit some relatives I had found via the internet, of whom I had no previous knowledge. It was to be a journey back in time with them too to discuss and research how our family had split, and one sister had moved to America in the late 1870s. We were able to follow the story and the reasons for their upheaval in newspaper articles and documents from that era.
The painting commemorates this journey.
