I set up my easel alongside the old railway line at Hovingham on a very changeable weather day to say the least! I was aiming for an expressive capture of the tempestuous sky looming over the hill and to make use of the rectangular bales stacked in the foreground to give an anchor to the scene. The arrival of a heavy shower acted as a prompt to speed up and make decisive strokes which I think resulted in an expressive capture of the scene. It also reminded me to buy a bigger (and not hand me down) umbrella! The delights of plein air painting in the UK summer!
