The great altar screen (reredos) at Winchester Cathedral is a sight to behold. This picture captures a striking image of a tour group admiring the magnificent scene. The scale of the screen is emphasised by the small figures. It was probably Cardinal Beaufort, one of the richest prelates in Christendom, who planned a new reredos behind the high altar. This huge screen, incorporating highly naturalistic sculpture, as well as a gold and silver retable, was probably begun in the 1440s and completed in the 1470s by Bishop Waynflete. The astonishing chantry chapels erected for both men stand nearby in the retrochoir and, in 1476, the shrine of St. Swithun was moved between them.
This drawing depicts a scene of a group of ladies being given a tour of the magnificent Winchester Cathedral. The drawing is predominantly rendered in greyscale with pencil but the figures have been given a splash of colour to highlight their modernity against this stunning historic backdrop of the Reredos and Great Screen.
