The painting began as a sketch made on location at a small archway underneath the central line underground tube line near Roman Rd in east London. The composition is based on a drawing of a small pedestrian arch that I pass on a weekly basis on the way to Bow. The challenge in the painting was to reconcile the scale of the figure and the background, this was in part resolved by using the relatively plain rectangular background of the billboard poster isolating the figure to some extent from the background scene. I added a dog and a companion figure who is visible on the bottom edge of the canvas. As the painting developed I added a view to the left of the central figure which complicated the railway bridge motif, the central figure is somewhat fused into the distressed rectangle of the bill board poster behind her and I felt that this rectangle was a visualisation of her emotional state.
