I have been painting salt marshes on the coast of Essex and Kent for a couple of years now, and particularly like the area around Tollesbury in Essex. It’s a fairly undiscovered part of the country with wonderful light & unique scenery and I'm also drawn to the juxtaposition of the industrial buildings that are often scattered across the horizon...
This painting is the largest from my Tollesbury series to date, and incorporates a combination of many of the techniques that I've used in other paintings of this area.
It's one of those paintings which you really have to look at closely to see all the detail, as it's made up of hundreds of fragments of my hand painted papers collaged onto a large canvas. The pieces of collage are little artworks in themselves and are full of detail and history. You can see several 'close-up' details of the painting here.
The finished work was then glazed with a matte varnish to enhance the colours and textures of the collage, and also to bond and protect it.
I'm usually very critical of my work but I have to admit that I was really pleased with this one.
Another painting of this view from my salt marsh series was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London 2022 and a second one was selected for the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Also, and thanks to Artfinder, I've sold a further 3 paintings from this series.
The canvas is sold professionally framed in a white wood float/ tray frame and is ready to hang.
