This is one of a series of drawings made from life in Tokyo, Japan last year. Tokyo is an incredibly densely populated city and when you are up high you can’t see the street and the buildings seem almost never ending!
I enjoy drawing scenes that are very visually complicated and busy and when I first see them I feel they are too much. I like to study these busy scenes and look for smaller areas or sections within them that catch my eye. Before I start drawing I will usually have already planned out the scene I want to draw and sometimes numerous others to draw later!
From these smaller focused beginnings I start to build up the pictures and in doing so often notice other smaller areas that I might focus on separately in another piece.
This was definitely the case with this Tokyo series of drawings as this huge city would slowly reveal different parts of its many interesting and uniquely Japanese juxtaposed structures to me as I worked on each piece.
