Original artwork description:

Large ( 40" x 30" - 102cm x 76cm) painting. Continuing my ' powerful places ' series of paintings. This painting draws on my memories of the iconic Mayan temple at Tikal in Guatemala, Central America.

This main temple rises to 47 metres high but worth the climb to the top for the view over the rain forest. They used Tikal for the filming of star wars ' The empire strikes back' I believe. The big draw is to get there early enough to see the morning sun reflected on the main temple when it takes on a golden glow. I travelled here on the mountain road through the rainforest on a public bus from Belize. Back then some 20 years ago the buses were regularly stopped by bandits at gun point and the tourists (mostly backpackers on this route ) would be relieved of all their valuables. The day before I went, the early bus had been held up and the tourists were all were forced to lie face down on the verge at gunpoint. I had travelled so far to see Tikal, that I did take the bus the following day with a dummy wallet and a credit card tucked down my sock! The bus stopped in all the villages on the way and gave out a load of sweets to all the children and we were not robbed thankfully!

This painting incorporates my characteristic use of reflective paints to capture the light. I have incorporated a range of sumptuous 'Golden' paints, iridescent pearl, iridescent gold, ultramarine violet, interference violet, phthalo blue and phthalo green to attempt to capture the light reflected from the temple. We are worth it !The painting comes to life under varying lighting conditions. Artificial light accentuates the reflective quality of the painting ( please see last image )

Created on a Reeves cross braced deep box canvas, painted white on the sides, so you may choose not to frame. However I believe that a plain white frame would be beneficial. Initialed on the front and signed on the back and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.

Corded and ready to hang.
