In this painting two androgynous figures are intertwined intimately in a combined gesture of topsy-turvy seduction. The painting's edges lock the figures in to a space that feels at once constricted and ramshackle, cursory and lush. Disaster feels impending, but the nascent expectation of illicit fun lends an irresistible aura of daring to the mood of the gamely acrobatic duo. The title reinforces an implicit air of casual adventurism in the face of potential peril. This work is part of my ongoing series examining the struggle of being human.
Influences, among others, include Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch, Bob Thompson, George McNeil, Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Francesco Clemente, R.B. Kitaj and Willem de Kooning.
