This piece was nominated for the Dutch Portrait Prize 2023 and was displayed at the Vlaardingen Museum and Zeist Castle.
If you are looking for a remarkable work of art that invites reflection and discussion, this might be the one for you. In my work, I explore the deeper layers within us, with a strong awareness of the passing of time. A true statement artwork for a collector with guts.
This work depicts three women at a table: my mother and two sisters. The reason I enjoy painting the people around me is because they hold depth and carry a certain weight. This doesn't mean that capturing their character or specific features is my goal in the painting. In this piece, they are part of a captured moment, a story yet to be told.
I painted this work "live," behind glass, at Rotterdam Central Station. (see video below) For several months, travelers could witness the painting process day by day. From the imprimatura (underlayer) to the various transparent top layers. This approach, reminiscent of the 'old masters,' is evident in certain shadow areas and my mother's bracelet, where the underlying surface is still visible.
This painting is made with high quality oil paint on the finest linen. The quality frame of walnut wood is custom made for this painting. The painting is signed on the back and the frame is ready to hang.
