The Netherlands is responsible for popularizing tulips but they actually originated in the near east, probably Oman or Iran, where they were growing wild around the 10-11th century, By the 15th century western diplomats to the region started taking note of the striking flower and they were rapidly introduced to Europe sparking a love affair which lasts to this very day. Tulips were frequently depicted in Dutch Golden Age paintings, and the Netherlands is now the world's major exporter. The artist lives near the Dutch tulip fields. They are an incredible sight, if a little intimidating for an artist - there is just too much bright color on show there. These three just happened to be in his garden. He painted the background like this, just because he can.
