Original artwork description:

This painting is part of an ongoing series in which I am exploring the layered complexities of city life through reflections, silhouettes and fragmented shapes. These layered perspectives hint at the ways urban environments shape us, sometimes isolating us while at other times creating unexpected, beautiful connections.

Painting these scenes is my way of pausing the fast-paced rhythm of city life to find its quieter, hidden narratives. The reflections and silhouettes I create reveal a world that is both fragmented and interconnected, where the people I paint often exist amongst layers of glass and shadow. Each piece becomes a visual metaphor for how we experience urban life: constantly in motion, often reflected back at us from unexpected angles, full of both immediacy and distance.

I work almost exclusively with oil paint on canvas, building up layers from a loose sketch, using brushes, rollers, scrapers and oil sticks to add depth and density; ideas are developed on the canvas, and they may later be erased or simplified, until I feel that I have a achieved a certain kind of balance.

Andrew McNeile Jones studied fine art at Ruskin School of Art, at Oxford University, in the 1980s. He then trained in film making, working in London as a producer and director for several years; he returned to painting full-time in the early 2000s.

He has won several prizes, including first prize in the ING Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries in 2022; he exhibits regularly in London and has also exhibited in several other European cities.

He now lives and works back in Oxford.

Much of his work is deeply influenced by his interest in film lighting and the creation of ‘tableaux’ which contain a narrative element.
