In stories the fairy realms often seem to be accessed through liminal spaces like lakes and ponds. There are lots of Welsh folk tales of bottomless pools and magical things emerging from bodies of water. I like the idea that you don't need much though, maybe just a puddle, a rusty ladder and the right frame of mind to access these unknown kingdoms.
