Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, I tend to pick out patterns and colours, almost piecing them together in my mind a bit like a jigsaw.
Ever since I have given in to this - what should I call it? A foible? - when I paint, the excitement I have when starting a new piece is huge; I use a tiny brush and just build up the patterns and colours as I go. A vase of flowers against a patterned background is a constant inspiration as it gives me the opportunity to paint with a three dimensional object as a starting point, while just getting lost in my passion for flat pattern, whether it consists of organic, flowing shapes or more geometric, interlocking ones.
Four coats of gesso, painted in acrylics and varnished to bring the colours out, and to protect the painting.
