“The Warm Beach” is an acrylic on canvas painting 89cmsHx89cmsWx2cmsD. It is stretched on a custom made wooden stretcher with steel corner and side braces. (Please see photographs). The canvas is exhibition quality.
The painting is inspired by a series of photographs taken in Summer 2021 from the dunes at Birkdale Beach, Southport, North West U.K. It is a beach painting. The initial stages of the work began with drawings and colour studies which in turn evolved into a stylised interpretation of light and colour. Although the focus of the painting relates to the colour and light of a brilliant summer’s day, it can also be seen as a semi-abstract colour composition.
Birkdale beach is just a starting point. I walk this beach every morning and I see the changes each season brings. I love the warmth of the yellows, browns and ochres against the green dune grasses and the blue sky. The painting is more about the saturation of colour in an open space. My paintings are about atmospheres. I hope the paintings convey an expression that is a declaration of a personal physiognomy. I build my paintings in layers of thin, transparent washes of colour combined with and overworked with impasto applications. I use brushes, knives and cloths. I let the paint take its own course. I like the process of painting, so I purposefully leave in the traces of its behaviour such as the marks of knife and brush and the stream and trickle of diluted pigment. I respect and work with the nature of paint. I am continually inspired by modernists and colourists Barbara Rae, Howard Hodgkin, Gillian Ayres , John Hoyland and Mark Rothko. I look to the Impressionists to enjoy their visual responses to light and colour.
The painting is shipped in a custom heavy duty cardboard crate.
