An imaginary scene of a battle between the Curonians, also known as the Baltic Vikings, and the Scandinavian Vikings is depicted in the painting. Such clashes were common during that time, particularly between the Danish Vikings and the Curonians. The Scandinavians frequently hired the Curonians to participate in joint campaigns. The Curonians were known for their warlike nature and frequently conducted campaigns in neighboring lands themselves.
The Curonians lived on the Baltic Sea in modern Lithuania and Latvia.
