My dreams influence my storytelling in paintings quite often. It is one of the main sources of material for my series Reconnecting Time and Memory. Oftentimes, I am not quite sure whether I am remembering a dream, or something that actually happened. That is not the case for this painting. The imagery came to me in a dream and it holds a certain tension, as well as a certain calmness. This juxtaposition of image and emotion keeps it in the realm of dream, but touches on the visceral disconnect created as a child of divorce. Mind you, divorce back in the 1970s was a far more scandalous notion that today, where it is expected. Divorce, regardless, creates an invisible barrier, a divide...or in this case a trench in one's heart and emotional well-being. Too many children have this as a core memory, rather than simply building castles in the sand.
