This plein air work was created during a 5-day watercolour painting workshop in Normandy which I participated in with other members of the Belgian watercolour institute. I discovered this view on taking a stroll up the road from our hotel at Cap Hornu - a beautiful isolated spot on the Baie de Somme.
I love painting tracks leading to places – forest tracks, moorland tracks, hillside tracks, mountain tracks, clifftop tracks and so on….I liked the way this farm track leading down to the bay combines the agriculturally cultivated countryside leading to the wild unspoilt estuary beyond, where only nature has formed the topography. On a bright summer's day, we are invited to take this walk down to the bay and breathe the fresh sea air.
I have accentuated the shadows in the foreground in order to draw attention to the view beyond. I enjoyed adding some of the details of the countryside such as the ploughed furrows in the field, hedges and fence posts. I have used paler colours in the background to accentuate the distance and give the feeling of a wide expanse. The thin white line on the horizon suggests the infinite sea beyond.
