The Time of the Long Shadows... is one of my favorite paintings. It translates in a visual language a specific psychological situation or stage of one's individual path. Of course it is difficult and risky to explain all as it is difficult to explain a dream in full. A dream always has many levels and this is what I like about dreams and paintings - they could convey many messages (even contradictory) simultaneously.
It seems to me, in this painting we witness that moment when a person stops for a while to look critically at their personality. The structure in the background that is falling apart stands for the old personality that has reached its end point and now should fall down. The idiosyncratic creature in yellow (left) that resembles a chicken cared for by its mother (the figure beside) is also critically scrutinized and questioned by the skeptical guy that sits firmly on the ground to the right. The figure in the middle that should balance between left and right looks surprised and has nothing to offer except the facts that are already known.
Yellow and violet are complementary colors that would annihilate each other if mixed and in the color equation of the painting they make it equal to zero. On the other hand the yellow is the color of intuition, the insight and the violet is the conjunction of red (emotions) and blue (thought).
Notes:
* The work is framed with thin black laths only.
