Original painting by Alan Harris, British artist,
The Striking Clock is a painting by Alan Harris featuring the great Big Ben. Standing tall and proud at the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben serves as one of London’s most beloved and iconic landmarks.
The gothic-styled tower standing 315 feet (96 m) high holds a four-faced clock and was built in 1858 at the far end of the Parliament. The clock featured on the tower is renowned for its precision and accuracy. Upon its completion, the clock was known around the world as both the largest and most accurate four-faced clock on the planet. Each clock face is truly a glasswork masterpiece, made up of 312 opal glass shards. Built in honour of Queen Victoria, the clock still rings every fifteen minutes, and the sound can be heard for a radius of up to 5 miles, keeping Londoners punctual to this day!
In this large-format work, his mode of painting continued to be shaped by modern dynamism in his rapid use of brushstrokes and his determination to capture momentary effects of light in the stormy skies.
