Inspired by a beautiful photo from 'Walking with a camera' in the English Lake District. An abstracted landscape capturing the feeling of an early morning in the lakes. Expressing in oil paint and describing the ruggedness and beauty of the Cumbrian hills.
As with all my paintings, I'm inspired by the landscape and strive to emulate the work of Rembrandt by building the painting in layers. I love Rembrandt's textures and I've studied them close up many times. Starting in monochrome and then glazing and scumbling many transparent layers over the underpainting. this gives me the control to establish the tones and motif, leaving me free to play with the colours and tones, expressing the feel and atmosphere of the landscape.
